The public schools are ranked as some of the best and one of the top ten library systems in the country. Fairfax is home to George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, showcasing first class entertainment, the Fairfax Symphony, and the world renown Patriot Center seating 10,000 for concerts, sporting events and special entertainment. Associated with the University is also the First Amendment, a professional theater company.

The area is steeped in history. The Fairfax Museum is housed in a two story brick school house constructed in 1873, and contains Civil War artifacts and exhibits. Often seen in Mathew Brady's Civil War photographs, the historical national landmark Fairfax Courthouse was used as a signal post and housed of both armies at various times during the Civil War.

Old Town Village Fairfax is a Town Center combination of classy office space, sidewalk cafes, boutiques and retail shops and housing. Fair Oaks Mall, one of the region’s largest shopping centers features an upscale mix of more than 190 specialty stores, services and restaurants. Fairfax Corner is an exciting project consisting of entertainment venues, retail shops, offices and residences in an ensemble of architecturally striking buildings, walkable main streets .
